What is SEO?
Search engine optimistaion or SEO as people in the know call it is a technique use to get a site indexed and ranking in search engines above millions and millions of competing websites. Good SEO will mean that you are on the top spot and should receive lots of traffic for your specific keyword.
“Organic Seo” or “Natural Seo”
Organic SEO is when a website or web page ranks naturally in the search engine results page or (SERP’s) and and is only using seo tricks that are “white hat” and not anything that is risky or is seen as unethical. All our websites that we currently work on only use “White Hat” seo methods and we don’t ever use “Black Hat” tactics.
Ethical SEO (White Hat SEO) Vs Black Hat SEO
Ethical search engine optimization is basically to follow the guidelines and the accepted practices to SEO a website. This basically means that we don’t use tricks that are used by Black Hat practitioners’. IN the long run White Hat search engine optimisation normally has abetter long term results as most Black Hat techniques work for the short term then get de indexed, Where as White Hat SEO is done using methods that have longer last effects. SO for example if google changes its algorithm we should not be effected as we are keeping with in the guidelines that has been set.
Why is my site not showing up in Search Engines
If I had a pound for every time I have had this questions asked I would be a very rich man. There can be a lot of different reasons as to why your site is not displaying in the search engines or in fact display very well in them. Anything in the following list could effect your rankings.
- Your website may not be SEO’d or maybe its not been SEO’d at all.
- Your website may not be readable by the search engines
- Your site may be missing crucial information, like titles descriptions or simply content that is critical in indexing your pages.
- Some times scripts you have running on your site actually block the search engines from being able to crawl the pages
- Hopefully your site has not been banned by the search engines for using something that is forbidden (Black Hat)
- Not been properly submitted
My site shows up in search results, but not for the keywords I want.
Once again this is all about using the right keywords for your pages and not just using lots of keywords as this will have negative results on your search engine placements. Good Keyword research is probably the most import aspect of SEO as it gives you the right foundations for you and your site.
Keyword Research and SEO
Keyword research has huge effect on a websites traffic, if you target the wrong keywords you might be ranking for keywords that don’t get searched for as much as the keywords that you should be ranking for. Keyword research is where you should be looking first when you build a site as this gives you an idea for all the content and ideas for how each page should be constructed. Once you get your keyword research right you are in a much better position than many other people on the net.
What is search friendly design
A search engine friendly design is a site that is built knowing what the guidelines of the search engines set out and building a site that is optimised in a way that makes it easy for the search engine spiders to crawl you and to make their job a lot easier. You need to avoid using Flash on your site and to make sure that your site is built with the search engines in mind.
Do search engines still use meta tags?
This is a question that I get asked a lot and its normally dumb web designers that thinks that meta tags are no longer used and that they are not needed. The amount of sites that I have looked at for clients that have been built by web designers and there are no Meta tags. Meta tags are not as important as they once use to be but they are still very important and you should always ensure that you have them on every single page of your site and that they used correctly.
